<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">By coincidence, I'd recently changed my iPhone lock screen to a sunrise shot I took 12 months ago, when I got my phone out to check the official sunset time I had this great idea.</span><br />

It was Day 3 of the Melbourne Ashes Test Match at the MCG. Like most cricket matches, there were a few slow periods, but Brad enjoyed the day and wants to go again!</span><br />

have uploaded over <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smjb/" target="_blank">5000 photos</a> since joining in 2007. I often embed
photos hosted on Flickr to this, and my other blogs. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Today <a href="http://blog.flickr.net/en/2013/12/18/flickr-web-embeds/" target="_blank">Flickr announced</a> changes to their embedding code so that additional info is shown, and readers can scroll through other photos from the embedded image. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">This post is simply to test out what happens when the new code is used, so below is a picture of my daughter, embedded from Flickr .</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="451" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smjb/11265105664/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="640"></iframe> <br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">I was a little worried when I first heard about this, but I see the old HTML option is still available, so we can choose how we embed photos, so I give this a thumbs up!</span>Simon Yeohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584777584098876247noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7638625408230871377.post-69617994890214169482013-11-17T07:58:00.001+11:002013-11-17T08:03:00.104+11:00Road trip with Brad - 2013<div style="margin: 0; overflow: hidden; padding: 0; width: 500px;">

I wouldn't have guessed it has been over 4 years since I signed up to the then relatively new social media service!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What was my very first tweet?..."Just signed up to twitter".</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Almost three months later I tweeted "Why should I bother with Twitter?"</span><br />

Simply adding a page in <a href="http://www.blogger.com/" target="_blank">Blogger</a> maintains the same layout as the rest of the blog, complete with the search, archive, labels and adds that appear in the right column, but I'd like my best photos to be shown using the full available width of the blog. <br />
I could pay to make some really nice pages using <a href="http://www.smugmug.com/" target="_blank">SmugMug</a> or <a href="http://www.squarespace.com/" target="_blank">SquareSpace</a>, but so far my hobby of an online presence only costs me a nominal amount for domain names and a Pro Flickr subscription, so I'd rather not throw money into the cloud when there are free options available. <br />
Free options? Yes, there are still plenty of ways to maintain an online presence without costing a cent (and I'm not thinking about social media at all); <br />
<ul>
<li>As my photos are already on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smjb/" target="_blank">Flickr</a>, the easiest for me would be to simply add a link to a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smjb/sets/72157632796575842/detail/" target="_blank">Flickr set</a> or <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smjb/sets/72157632796575842/show/" target="_blank">slideshow</a>. However this is hard to incorporate into my blog, as I cant link back to my homepage. </li>
<li>I tried starting another blog using Blogger, but a blog format would make a new dated post whenever I wanted to add more photos. So I added a <a href="http://simonyeophotos.blogspot.com.au/p/blog-page.html" target="_blank">page</a> to that blog (formatted without the extra column) for my best photos, but that gets awkward because even though I can link back to my homepage, I cant remove the link to the homepage of that blog. </li>
<li>I thought I'd give <a href="http://smjbk.wordpress.com/simonyeo-photos/" target="_blank">WordPress a try</a>, this is a very popular <a href="http://wordpress.com/" target="_blank">platform</a>, but ran into similar problems of dated posts in a blog format or a page with links to it's own homepage that I couldn't remove. </li>
<li>The next option to try was <a href="http://sites.google.com/" target="_blank">Google Sites</a>. I originally <a href="https://sites.google.com/a/smjbk.com/www/" target="_blank">tried</a> Google’s free web site building service a few years ago to a make a family page, but found it very hard to work out and far from user friendly. I ended up going to Blogger for our <a href="http://www.smjbk.com/" target="_blank">family site</a>. (I now use Blogger for the site you’re reading now and my <a href="http://www.simonsweblinks.com/" target="_blank">Web Links</a> site.) Having another look at Google Sites recently I still found it difficult to work out, but they have made some improvements from a few years back. The advantage this time for me was that it doesn’t have to be a blog format, so I was able to create a <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/simonyeophotos/" target="_blank">photo page</a> that linked back to my homepage.</li>
</ul>
Sure it took some trial and error with cursing and head scratching, and it’s not as pretty as a paid site, but I got there in the end. That’s why I enjoy my online hobby.<br />

Seeing as I haven’t really used Siri in real life, I thought I’d have a play…</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">First I asked Siri to “sing me a song”; <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit0V48ieTNxe72y2EcKX2k9ueeS0RY8AywKylk4b-vbVWhpneE718uHmexZ-ecArFICrbeCBisNCq4oaxqhu8vWVBKq6BWqvFAXvB8gWpS5bKKbfvrsWhWVMx52Ltn8ETaL4KRAolauPE/s1600-h/IMG_2885%25255B7%25255D.png" target="_blank"><img alt="IMG_2885" border="0" height="381" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP0QnbHw2whoGEFB3ddN2y7RKQjLwSLziaVHb2NFFy6OyoH95Ms5TxURu8pM-hqaMnjY2Zb51PWgfyP0OkTcTo4Xa_y_-jH5jpit_vEe2vJYdlHbjBAl9tebawcN3ycfACnkMGl7e6tlI/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-color: -moz-use-text-color; border-style: none; border-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_2885" width="250" /></a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">I then asked Siri to “tell me a story”, but this time “she” was a bit more reluctant and came up with several excuses such as “you’ve heard it before”, but with a bit of persistence I finally got my story; </span><br />

I'm using the free Blogger platform from Google, so there isn't as many options as some of the paid blogging hosts, but they still have several templates to play around with.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So, as I fine tune the look of "Simon Says Blog", here's one last look at the original layout... </span><br />

Including re-tweets, I tweeted 43 times today. My topics varied from the passing of cricket legend Tony Greig, interacting with a guest on ABC News24, a very healthy "discussion" on the safety of B-Triple trucks, photography re-tweets and linking to a YouTube video of my kids.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">All these tweets today took my total number over 1000, but I still call myself only a casual user of Social Media.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Twitter are slowly rolling out the ability to view all of your <a href="http://blog.twitter.com/2012/12/your-twitter-archive.html" target="_blank">twitter history</a>. When it's available to me, I'll be really interested to look back at what I posted in my early days.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> I took my trust Nikon along to try and get some nice shots. With a highish ISO setting and wide aperture I was happy with the results. There's a small street where everyone is right into their Chrtistmas lighting and lots of people walk through in admiration. I'm really happy with this shot which not only captures the extensive display of lights, but also the community atmosphere of this normally quiet <a href="https://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&ll=-38.084541,145.473795&spn=0.001856,0.004128&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=-38.084541,145.473795&panoid=YaR7flSIAL_lRRsoBIosVw&cbp=12,192.32,,0,8.77" target="_blank">Pakenham</a> street.</span><br />

Back then a Pentium4 with Hyper Threading, a huge 1GB of RAM and a second hard drive with a whopping 80GB extra storage was a really good system. Over the years there were upgrades to the graphics card, memory and hard drives. The old Dell served me well, until a few months ago when it finally died.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was time for a new computer. I thought about a laptop, but I already have a Netbook and iPad, so any portability concerns were covered. Also, the storage capacity of laptops are generally limited to a single 2.5 inch hard drive, and the potential for future upgrades of other hardware is limited. I looked at Dell desktops again, but they don't seem to allow as much customisation as they did 9 years ago. Dell also seemed pretty pricey for what you get.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Looking at various hardware vendors, I realised I could build a PC exactly the way I wanted much cheaper than the major brands, and still allow room for future upgrades so that this computer will last many, many years.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smjb/7756192322/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Some assembly required! by smjb, on Flickr"><img alt="Some assembly required!" height="438" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7117/7756192322_70f37d4bda_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hadn't assembled a computer from scratch before, </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">but having performed numerous upgrades and repairs to friends and families computers over the years</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> (as well as my old Dell), I was confident in the build.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The heart of my system is the Intel Core i5-3570K, </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">it is unlocked if I decide to go down the over-clocking road and incorporates the best Intel graphics. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm not a big "gamer" so I'm hopeful that I wont need a dedicated graphics card, </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">but if I do the motherboard has the slots needed.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've purchased two Seagate hard-drives for the new system to give me a total of 5TB of storage. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The 2TB drive is partitioned to keep the Operating System separate from everything else, </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">this will allow for easy re-installation when needed.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First-up in the build was installing the power supply into the case. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I chose a modular PSU to minimise the amount of unused cables in the case.</span></div>

For the next 12 months I've been elected to be Club Secretary. The first job for me in this role was to re-register the club's expired web domain and <a href="http://www.cardiniapiranhas.com.au/2012/06/new-web-site.html" target="_blank">set up</a> the web site. Being a small community based club, there's not much funds for a professional site, so I've used Google's blogger service to set up a free blog style web page. All we've had to pay is $25 for two years registration of the domain name.</span><br />

Sure its not a Genuine Nikon product, but it's about a quarter of the price.<br />
<br />
First impressions are that it is very slow (several minutes) to get an accurate GPS position, and before it does it can record old info to the Exif data of photos taken. When I turned the camera on today, for the first few minutes (and 30 odd photos I took of kangaroos in a field), it actually recorded GPS data from my front yard that it got from test shots taken the day before.<br />
<br />
Anyway, now I've got another excuse to get out and about taking more "test" photos.<br />

<br />
With the neigbour's roof and TV antenna at the bottom foreground for perspective, this was my best shot from about 45 minutes in the back yard. It's a 30 second exposure with my Nikon D5100.<br />

The conflict was a result of originally opening Blogger and You-Tube accounts using a Google-apps account, rather than a regular Google or Gmail account. I've had to open a new account, but at least my mail, blogs and videos can now all co-exist without getting in each other's way!<br />
<br />
With that all sorted, hopefully you'll see a few more blog posts now!Simon Yeohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16584777584098876247noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7638625408230871377.post-60723528955050182852011-08-23T23:28:00.000+10:002011-08-23T23:28:54.704+10:00Nikon D5100Well I finally entered the world of DSLR photography when my lovely wife got me a Nikon D5100 dual lens kit for my birthday back in June.<br />

<br />
For the past couple of months, in-between work and kids, I've been learning my way 'round this great camera. Being a big fan of <a href="http://flickr.com/">Flickr.com</a>, I've posted lots of pics online (check out my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smjb/">photostream</a>). Last weekend I dug out the old tri-pod and thought I'd try my hand at some long exposure night shots, and I'm very happy with the result.<br />
